Design 2
Project 3
Light ARC257
The objective of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel for Farmingdale State College that provides a peaceful and welcoming environment for individuals of all faiths to worship and reflect. The College believes that the thoughtful use of natural light can enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the space. The design will focus on controlling and shaping light to create a space that is both functional and visually inspiring, supporting worship, meditation, and reflection.

Light Background Research
Steven Holl - Chapel of St. Ignatius
Steven Holl described the chapel as “seven bottles of light within a stone box,” with each “bottle” symbolizing an important element of Catholic worship. Natural light passes through these forms to create unique physical and spiritual experiences, producing areas of both clear and colored illumination throughout the space.

The walls are carefully designed to regulate the way natural light enters the building. As sunlight passes through the colored glass windows, it reflects off the surfaces of the walls, which serve both as reflective elements and as barriers that guide and distribute light throughout different parts of the interior space.
The curved ceiling creates a sense of motion within the space, allowing light to move smoothly across the interior and shift in appearance throughout the day.
